Today, Vermont Conservation Voters (VCV) announced its endorsement of Charity Clark for Attorney General of Vermont. During her tenure as Attorney General, Clark has been an effective leader on issues aligned with Vermont Conservation Voters’ mission, championing policies that safeguard our environment and support our communities.

Through its endorsements, VCV aims to educate voters across the state on candidates whose values and actions align with their vision for Vermont to advance and defend policies that protect the environment and promote health, while advancing social, racial, and economic justice, and strengthening our democracy.

In her first term, Attorney General Clark helped deliver on historic environmental and climate action. She took action against a big agrotech company, Monsanto, for creating, marketing, selling, and distributing a class of toxic chemicals known as PCBs that polluted Vermont’s waterways and fish habitat, and have contaminated our schools. In the legislature, Clark supported the Climate Superfund Act, landmark legislation that holds the largest fossil fuel companies financially accountable for a portion of the costs of climate change. Clark has also been a climate champion within her own office by establishing a Climate Initiative Working Group to ensure climate-friendly office practices are followed.

“Attorney General Clark has been an invaluable ally in passing historic climate legislation,” said Justin Marsh, political director, Vermont Conservation Voters. “She has consistently shown up to advocate for a range of policies that protect Vermonters – including being a vocal leader on legislation that bans toxic PFAS chemicals from consumer goods.”

“I am honored to receive this recognition of my commitment to Vermont’s environment and our climate. As Attorney General, I will continue to take every opportunity to further this commitment.” Clark added “My aim is for my work for our environment to be part of my legacy as Attorney General.”

Marsh added, “After the recent passage of several notable environmental policies, it’s critically important to have state leaders ready to uphold and implement those actions. Clark has indicated that she is ready to proudly defend groundbreaking laws such as the Climate Superfund Act in the event of a lawsuit, and it’s that kind of commitment we need in our Attorney General.”

For its endorsement process, VCV invites all statewide candidates to participate in an interview process. In addition to holding interviews, VCV staff gathers information about each interested candidate’s environmental voting record and demonstrated leadership if they previously served in office, as well as examples from their career and work they’ve done in their communities that align with our mission. The VCV Board of Directors votes on all endorsements. For our current list of endorsements, visit https://vermontconservationvoters.com/endorsements/.
